Obesity - Review of Literature and Recommended Remedies

Obesity: The state of being well above one's normal weight.

A person has traditionally been considered to be obese if they are more than 20 percent over their ideal weight. That ideal weight must take into account the person's height, age, sex, and build. For adults, a body mass index of 25 or more is considered "overweight" and a BMI of 30 or more is considered "obese". For children, the charts of Body-Mass-Index for Age are used, where a BMI greater than the 85th percentile is considered "at risk of overweight" and a BMI greater than the 95th percent is considered "obese". BMI is calculated by dividing weight of the person in kilograms by square of height in meters. Obesity has been more precisely defined by the National Institutes of Health (the NIH) as a BMI of 30 and above. (A BMI of 30 is about 30 pounds overweight.) . Besides BMI waist circumference should be measured. Waist circumference of more than 40 inches in men is considered to be too high, while in females waist circumference should not be more than 35 inches. Obesity is often multifactorial, based on both genetic and behavioral factors. Obesity has been linked to several serious medical problems, including:--Diabetes , Sleep apnea , High blood pressure, Stroke, Heart attack, Heart failure, athelerosclerosis, Prostate cancer, Colon cancer, Osteoarthritis. 30% of adolescents in INDIAN cities are overweight who on reaching adulthood will be Diabetic, Hypertensive or Heart patients.
