Obesity and Reproduction
Abstract: "Be fit, be fertile. Ensure healthy and long life of new generation." The word obesity is derived from the Latin word Obesus which means "one who has become plump through eating." Negative effects of obesity on health and both male and female fertility have been known since long before the advent of modern medicine. The references can be found in the writings of Hippocrates, Galen and Avicenna. Inclusion of obesity in the classification of chronic diseases and its rising prevalence worldwide has renewed the interest of scientists in exploring the relationship of obesity and reproduction.
